Finals week at Brigham Young University-Idaho can be one of the most stressful times of the semester, but with the right strategies, you can make it through successfully. Here are some tips to help you stay on top of your studies, take care of yourself, and finish strong.

1. Plan Ahead

Start by organizing your schedule. Take note of when and where each final exam will take place, and prioritize studying for the ones that require the most preparation. Using a planner or a digital calendar can help you map out your study sessions effectively.

2. Find the Right Study Spot

The right environment can make a big difference in how well you focus. BYU-Idaho has plenty of great study spots, including the David O. McKay Library, the Manwaring Center, and various quiet areas across campus. If you prefer a little background noise, the MC Crossroads or a local coffee shop might be ideal.

3. Use Campus Resources

Take advantage of tutoring services, review sessions, and online resources offered by the university. The Academic Support Center provides tutoring and study groups that can be incredibly helpful for tough subjects.

4. Stick to a Study Routine

Rather than cramming all night before an exam, try spacing out your study sessions. Using techniques like the Pomodoro method (25-minute study sessions with short breaks) can help you stay focused and retain information better.

5. Take Care of Your Body

Your physical health is just as important as your academic success. Make sure to:

  • Get at least 7-8 hours of sleep per night
  • Eat nutritious meals instead of relying on junk food
  • Stay hydrated and limit caffeine intake
  • Take breaks to move around and stretch

6. Manage Stress and Stay Positive

Finals can be overwhelming, but keeping a positive mindset can make a huge difference. Engage in activities that help you relax, such as taking a walk around campus, practicing deep breathing, or even attending a devotional to find peace and motivation.

7. Study with Friends (But Stay Focused!)

Group study sessions can be great for motivation and accountability—just make sure they stay productive! Quiz each other, explain difficult concepts out loud, and keep distractions to a minimum.

8. Know When to Take a Break

Burnout can be counterproductive. If you find yourself losing focus, take a break to recharge. A quick workout at the BYU-Idaho Fitness Center, a short nap, or even some fresh air can help reset your mind.

9. Stay Organized on Exam Day

The night before your exam, set out everything you need—ID, pencils, calculator, and any other materials. Arrive early to your testing location to avoid unnecessary stress.

10. Celebrate Your Hard Work

Once finals are over, take some time to reward yourself. Whether it’s a fun outing with friends, a treat from a local café, or just catching up on sleep, acknowledge your efforts and enjoy the break before the next semester.

By following these tips, you can navigate finals week at BYU-Idaho with confidence. Stay focused, take care of yourself, and finish strong!
